When starting up and running a business there’s so much to think about, colour can seem insignificant. Though the colour scheme of a brand can have a huge effect on people’s thoughts towards the business.
Colour can create different feelings, emotions and memories for people, which of course all depends on their life experiences, though there are universal emotions created by colours. For example:
- Red = Excitement & Passion
- Yellow = Warmth & Happiness
- Green = Peace & Wealth
- Blue = Royal & Trust
- Purple = Creativity & Wisdom

I know when I see the colours red and yellow together I automatically think of McDonalds, and when I see yellow and black I think of Nikon etc. These brands have perfected their colour branding. Not only are these brands recognisable by their colours but the colours also fit with the nature of the business. For example, Nikon create Cameras, the black fits because that takes it back to the old way of doing things with film cameras and using dark rooms etc, and the yellow represents light, which is the whole creation process of a photograph.
So, colour can have a tremendous effect on your business, and so should be given some thought, don’t just pick your favourite colour. Once you have decided on your colours, then stick to them, don’t keep changing your mind let people recognise the colours. Repeat them, everywhere, online or on print, in your catalogue or even on your email signature.
