The #Hashtag

You’re not alone if you are confused by hashtags, we all see them, and we all use them, but do we really know what they do and how to use them properly.

What Is It?

A hashtag is used on social media to identify a certain topic or theme, it’s a word or phrase that starts with a hash sign (#). A hashtag has no spaces, even if it has multiple words. (#mondaymotivation).

  • It makes your content discoverable, as when users search the word or phrase every post that includes that hashtag will appear.
  • A hashtag is usually a word or phrase of a trending theme or topic for example the hashtag “#brexit” became very popular in 2016 when we left the European Union.
  • Hashtags are clickable, so when clicked you can see all posts that include that same hashtag.
  • Hashtags can be used on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google Plus, Tumblr, LinkedIn and Pinterest.

The History Of The Hashtag

Searching words and phrases was always available to users on twitter, but the word or phrase that they were looking for, was not always the keyword in the tweets appearing, and so Twitter bought along the hashtag in 2007. Though the hashtag didn’t really take off until 2009, which is when Twitter introduced the clickable hashtag. Later on other social sites jumped on the trend and introduced the hashtag.

How To Use Hashtags Effectively

They can be the success of your social media account if used properly, as they can increase your impressions significantly. Here are some dos and don’ts when using hashtags.

  • Use trending hashtags to reach more people, the more people tweet the same hashtags the more popular they become and so the more people search for that word or phrase. Meaning an increase of impressions and interactions.
  • Do not use too many hashtags in a single tweet, this can seem desperate.
  • With low character limits espically on Twitter, you can easily run out of space. Hashtag existing words in the text to save space
  • Keep it relevant, if you are talking about the new iPhone use #apple, and not completely irrelevant words, such as #cutedog #flowers.

How Using Hashtags Can Benefit Your Business

  • You can reach your target audience by using certain hashtags. Social media is becoming more and more popular for shopping and searching for potential buys. So, take advantage of this and hashtag your products or services.
  • Hashtags are all about conversation and discovering related posts, join in the conversation.
  • By using hashtags will mean more people are likely to see your post and so increasing brand awareness.
